The Capiz Collection
What
are Capiz seashell ?
Capiz shells are actually the outer shell of a marine mollusk, whose scientific
name is placuna placenta, more commonly called "windowpane oyster", which is
found only in the shallow coastal waters of the Philippine and Indonesian island
chains. Philippine Capiz seashell are so named because they were originally
harvested near the town of Capiz, on the island of Panay.
Are windowpane oysters an endangered species?
No, they're plentiful and the Philippine Government is supportive of their
harvest. Their use in decorative handmade products violates no environmental or
other legal regulations.
Where does the term "windowpane oyster" come from?
In Philippine colonial days, Capiz seashell were used in making windows, because
they're translucent enough to allow considerable daylight to pass through. These
windows, which can still be seen in older houses throughout the Philippines,
were made of small square shells, held together by thin strips of wood, designed
to slide open and closed.
