Skip Henderson
Price: $12.50
"Billy Bones and Other Ditties" is a wonderful CD collection of pirate songs and traditional sea shanties. In the liner notes, Skip Henderson writes:
"The criteria for these selections are that they are fun to listen to, and fun to perform. The sailor was a pragmatist and rarely had much use for ostentation. Consequently, his recreational (and working) music had a ring of simplicity and, of times, wry humor. Although the arrangements are more instrumented than would be found aboard ship or in a seaport pub, an effort was made to use instruments of traditional kind and ilk. I have deliberately chosen to incorporate talented bass, fiddle, mandolin, and guitar, in various tunes with far more flexibility than could be obtained with the ship-board gut bucket and primitive instruments of 'foo-foo' or skiffle bands. I hope you will allow me artistic license."
T
his is a definite improvement and makes for a much more entertaining CD.Not only does this CD contain some excellent songs, one of them is featured in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. You may recall the scene where the band is playing Skip's "Two Hornpipes" in the bar in Tortuga when the fight breaks out. That's actually the way Skip recorded it, long before it was chosen for the film. In Skip's version the band plays while a fight breaks out and ends with sounds of drunken pirates yelling and smashing things--just like in the movie. It would seem that it was his song that inspired that scene.
